(Base Media)- Our media reported last week that tens of thousands of government employees will soon be laid off.
In this report, we shared information citing government sources that the recently approved Public Employees Proclamation “will enable institutions to carry out their missions effectively.”
When Dr. Negeri Lencho, the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development, Employment and Technology Affairs of the House of People’s Representatives, gave a detailed explanation about the purpose and importance of the Proclamation, he did not mention the layoffs, but we mentioned that one of the main issues being addressed by the government was that “there are more government employees than needed.”
However, Dr. Negeri, in a statement issued by the Ethiopian Press Agency four days ago, said that “the proclamation creates a free and independent civil service based on merit and competition,” and that the proclamation also includes benefits for the workers.
The official added that the proclamation was issued to ensure that the government employee receives appropriate benefits based on merit and competition, and that the government does not aim to reduce the number of workers, and that the effort to confuse the public by distorting information is baseless.
The Standing Committee Chairman explained that the proclamation not only protects the obligations of workers but also their rights, makes the civil service competent, free and independent, and also allows for a composition of government workers similar to Ethiopia, and plays its role in facilitating working conditions for female workers.
Despite Dr. Negeri’s statement, he would like to explain to his audience that he still believes that the media’s report on the reduction of workers is accurate.
